Handmade Knives

Every knife I make is unique.  I do not set out to copy what others are doing or mass produce common designs.  I draw my inspiration from the things around me and use the best materials I can to create new original designs. All are handmade using minimal tools.  None are for sale.

Titanium Knife

The Titanium Knife was carved from a single piece of airplane grade titanium.  The grips are stingray skin, glued into hollows that were ground into the titanium block.  Though the blade is useless, this was my first attempt at making an integral knife.

Leaf Knife

One of my more frivolous designs, the Leaf Knife was inspired by a leaf from the Acuba Japonicus plant, which has points along the edge.  The blade is made of 1084/15N20 random Damascus, and the guard leaves are made of mild steel.  The handle is a piece of antler capped on the top and the bottom by ivory.

Caduceus Knife

The Caduceus is the symbol of the medical arts, represented by two snakes curled around a staff.  This image was inspired by the news of my father’s diagnosis of prostate cancer.  The blade is made of 1084/15N20 random Damascus that has been selectively etched.  The eyes are ruby on one side and sapphire on the other.  The guard is ivory and the handle is ebony, with a maple burl butt cap.

Trench Knife (Redux)

The Trench Knife came about after finding the handle (sans blade and pommel) in an antique store in Kalama, WA.  The brass handle came from an original trench knife used in WWII that originally had a four point spike blade.  The pommel is made ofbrass.  The blade was hollow ground from a piece of 1095 high carbon steel.

Push Dagger

This blade is based on a traditional push dagger design, with an integral guard that draws its shape from a seed pod opening up to reveal the treasures within.  The blade is made of 1095 steel and the handle is Lignum Vitae.

Raven Steals The Sun

My second effort at a push dagger is based on the Tlingit creation myth of the same name.  The blade is made of selectively etched 1084/15N20 Egyptian pattern Damascus with a brass insert for the eyes..  The bolster is made of mild steel and the handle is a piece of antler wrapped in multiple layers of leather.

Recurve Dagger

This dagger was created for the 2011 Knife In The Hat (KITH) exchange on Bladeforums.com.  The blade is 1084/15N20 damascus.  The guard and pommel are 1095, and the handle is hand carved walrus ivory.

Eagle Knife

The second of my bird themed knives, the Eagle Knife was made from a 1084 blade blank forged by Nick Wheeler that I reshaped and refined.  The handle is a crown piece of stabilized antler and the bolster/guard is carved from walrus ivory.

Balisong

Inspired by a Typhoon balisong kit I built for a friend, this adaptation has a random damascus blade sharpened on both sides.  The handles are made of mild steel with inlays of stabilized zebra wood that form chevrons both in the open and closed positions.

Damascus Slicer

Following the blade share of the Eagle knife, this simple slicer was made from a piece of random damascus and mated with a piece of stabilized amboyna burl.  The primary concept was to have the line of separation between the heartwood and sapwood follow the line of the plunge on the blade.

Trident Dagger

After completing the KITH dagger I was challenged to do it again by my uncle, who believed I should have kept the first dagger in the family.  The result is this Trident dagger, made from 1084 steel, with mild steel for the guard and pommel.  The handle is made of stabilized Koa.
